How about other kids?

How about other kids?
Dear all! Thank you for reading my journal today. Together, we can make a big difference in kids’ life.

The pandemic has stopped us from going to the central highland for months, but my passion has burned even harder for the underprivileged kids that I met and haven’t met. We want to do more for the kids in this region. One of the things that God has put in my heart lately is giving bikes to the kids in the mountainous areas.

This trip, I had a chance to go to Gia Lai province. It is my first trip here. A Long away. But when we arrived at the distribution site, 50 kids belonging to Ethnic minority Bana tribe were there waiting. They have been waiting for two hours. Just sitting by the bikes, staring at the bikes that they dreamed of for such long time.

I can’t imagine how hard it is for them to spend four hours to walk to school and back home every day. When it is hot, seeming ok to walk for that many hours but what about it when it rains?! and it rains for 5 to 6 months in a year. Again, I can’t imagine even though I walked to school for 12 years in my life. My heart breaks by just trying to wrap my thought around this.

One of the little boys who received a bike sent a message to us, saying: “Today was a very special day for me because I got a bike. I am so happy that I got a bike! I am so happy that I couldn’t say any words to express my Thank. I will try my best to study well to show that I deserve this new bike.”

(The boy who wrote the message)

Talking with a local official, I was told that there were few times bikes were given to kids in this area but so rare. Hearing this even makes the passion for minority ethnic kids grow bigger in my heart.

Among 50 kids sitting there at the distribution site was a little girl with tiny body and worn-out clothes that caught my attention. Her name is Dinh Thi Hong Nhung, in grade 6 and lives in Meo village, Dak Pling commune, Kong Chro district. Her father passed away when she was in kindergarten. She has one older brother and three other siblings who are younger than her. At first, she was shy to talk but after few minutes being there smiling with her, she started opening up. She shared with me she started walking to school at 5 am in the morning every day. It takes her two hours to walk each way.  On rainy days, she had to run to school. I can’t imagine this at all. I don’t know what time she has to get up in the morning to get ready to go to school each day. She told me she dreamed of a bike like this for so long because it can help her to go to school and get home quicker, especially helpful on rainy days.

With curiosity, I asked how many kids in her village walk to school and how many got bike today. She told me five kids out of so many got bikes today. She said she would ride her bike around her village to show people there. I wonder what the other kids will feel and think when they live in same village but don’t get bikes.

The need is huge there and we need help from everyone to be able to give kids childhood they deserve to have and be able to plan the seed of a better future in their life.

Sincerely,
Tam Tong
