Journal by Daniel Barnes
Today’s journal’s written by Daniel Barnes - a friend of mine for over 50 years. He actually was the first donor to GIBTK before it ever existed. Was such a pleasure to finally get him to see what he not only gave the "seed" gift to push me over the edge in beginning GIBTK but has continued to support us for over 20 years!!!!
I travelled with the GIBTK team with my daughter, Marina. My visit exceeded all expectations! Upon landing in Da Nang we were greeted by Robert, staff and children with long stem roses! The hugs and love was amazing. At this moment, we did not realize what the trip would include.
From meeting three of the heart patients that my family sponsored, distributing 50 bicycles, building and delivering water filtration systems and wheelchairs, and having the honor to tell a single mother with two young boys in the remote mountainous area that she is receiving a Compassion House.
Each of these experiences were bittersweet. It’s hard to witness such hardship, especially when they aren’t guaranteed a light at the end of the tunnel. It was an honor to provide them with hope.
Meeting the students makes us feel hopeful for their families and future of Vietnam. We were fortunate to see these young lives transformed in person. Even during our short visit, there were a few shining stars that stood out which made me so happy that their potential has been seen and we are able to provide them with opportunity. Robert’s staff did an outstanding job of translating and being with us literally every step of the way.
These experiences are hard to comprehend. The love, gratitude and overall sense of joy was overwhelming.
It’s amazing how two different languages, cultures and social economic differences can communicate with eyes and body language.
